Woody Allen is not entirely sure what he desires to do next in the film industry because he believes that “all the romanticism of filmmaking has been lost.”
In an interview with airmailpublished on the Internet on Saturday, the director was asked about his latest film A stroke of luckhis fiftieth feature film, and the delay it encountered in its release in North American markets.
“It doesn’t matter to me whether I get dealt here or not,” Allen said. “Once I get it, I won’t pursue it anymore. Distribution is not what it used to be. Now the distribution lasts two weeks in the cinema… And that’s it. Meaning, Annie Hala played in New York theaters for just over a year. It was in one theater for six or seven months, and then someone took it away and it hung there for another few months. The whole business has changed, and not in a very attractive way. All the romanticism of filmmaking is gone.”
In February, Hollywood reporter exclusively reported that MPI Media Group will release the picture in the U.S. on April 5 and digital/VOD on April 12 after debuting at the Venice Film Festival in September 2023. This followed “samizdat” links to A stroke of luck began circulating amongst American fans.
Allen has previously weighed in on his future in filmmaking, stating in 2022 that “a lot of emotion has left him” in the streaming era. In his latest interview, he confessed that he still has “no doubt about it.”
“I don’t want to have to go out to collect money. I think it’s a pain in the neck”, ” Rainy day in New York said the director. “But if someone comes along and calls and says we want to support the film, I would seriously consider it. I probably wouldn’t have enough willpower to say no because I have so many ideas.”
Allen’s popularity in the US has declined significantly in recent times amid the #MeToo movement and the resurgence of allegations of sexual abuse by his adopted stepdaughter, Dylan Farrow. Allen denied the accusations and, after a 1993 investigation, the Connecticut State Attorney didn’t charge him.
However, the director stays a polarizing figure, which led to the cancellation of his four-film, $68 million contract with Amazon Studios. Since then, he has had difficulty finding distribution for his latest titles.
Elsewhere in the interview with airmailAllen was asked about the idea of ”rejection” in society.
“Someone asked me about cancel culture, and I said, ‘If you’re going to be canceled, that’s the culture you want to be canceled from,’” he added. “Because who wants to be part of this culture?”
