Ben Simmons took the Met Gala’s “Garden of Time” theme literally.
The Brooklyn Nets star sported not one, but two timepieces at fashion’s biggest night on Monday. The first was an iced-out Patek Philippe watch, while the second was a bonkers briefcase watch. The black ensemble, which showcased a simple two-hand watch and gold hardware, gave the Aussie basketballer’s ensemble a Mad Hatter-esque feel that was in line with the flamboyant dress code.
Named after a 1960s short story by English author JG Ballard, the Garden of Time theme stems from the Costume Institute’s spring exhibit. Fashionistas, actors, models, athletes, and influencers all flaunted the theme with otherworldly evening gowns, dazzling jewelry, and exquisite wrist candy.
For her first Met Gala, Simmons was styled. Wesmore Parrett and wore a Thom Browne outfit that included custom boucle tweed suits and oversized coats. Parts of the impeccably crafted piece were hand-painted as a tribute to Ballard’s horror story. The overcoat was also embroidered with a white bullion rose in another nod to mythology. I, a rich count and a countess are turned to stone while clinging to a rose.

In addition to carrying the briefcase watch, Simmons wore a strap. Aquanaut Luce “Rainbow” up to his wrist. The Technicolor chronograph (ref. 7968/300R-001) features a 39.9 mm rose gold case, a mother-of-pearl dial engraved with an aquanaut pattern, and a red strap. The exquisite timepiece also features 52 baguette-cut multicolored sapphires and 50 baguette-cut diamonds on the bezel and dial.
Reaction to Simmons’ dress was overwhelmingly positive. Instagram, atleast. One user wrote, “One of the chairs for next year. He’s earned it.” Another wrote, “LOVEEE!! Watch, and subtle florals.” Others praised Thom Browne for nailing the short, writing “A reference to the couple’s go-to rock, watch 10/10. Thom Browne is the man you are.”
Simmons wasn’t the only celebrity showing off period-inspired gear on the Met’s famous steps, though. For her first Met Gala, singer Tyla wore a sculpted sandblasted Balmain gown and carried an hourglass instead of a regular clutch. Considering the fashion world has embraced watch anklets and timepiece chokers, perhaps briefcase watches and hourglass bags aren’t far behind.
