[The following story contains spoilers for Gladiator II.]
Ridley Scott already has a plan. Gladiator IIIand he hasn’t been shy when it comes to dropping hints about it.
The visionary director is promoting his new action epic sequel, which is set to earn $60 million in its opening weekend at the box office. Scott, who turns 87 next week, already wants to get back on the field — and not wait two decades this time.
Gladiator II After Paul Mescale’s Lucius murders two emperors, Gaeta and Caracalla (Joseph Coen and Fred Hatchinger), he enlists the support of an army and defeats the villain Macrinus (Denzel Washington). The ending gives a weary Lucius a chance to seize power for himself.
Scott says the sequel will follow and be inspired by this idea. The Godfather Part IIwhere Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) is now the undisputed leader of organized crime and must decide how far he will go to retain his crown.
“Already have an idea,” Scott pointed out The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve always had that idea. God father Michael ends up not wanting the job. He’s sitting there, and Al has this push-in. He has already kissed her hand. He has cheated on his wife by lying. [Lucius] Not so bad at all. He is thinking, ‘Father, what shall I do?’ Paul doesn’t want a job that’s a good place to start.
Scott added. Premier Magazine, “Next [film] will be about a man who doesn’t want to be where he is,” he also said Tomorrow movieI already have eight pages. I have started a very good image” and added, “If there is one Gladiator 3I don’t think you’ll ever get back on the field. But I had to go back to the field…”
Of course, any movie called Gladiator Somehow you have to find a way to bring your hero back to the fray. Even if Lucious becomes emperor, being emperor certainly didn’t stop the first film’s Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) from eventually stepping on the sand.
For his part, Mescale has said he’s more than willing to play the role a second time. “Oh yeah, massively down,” the actor said. Variety. “I don’t think that will happen. [24] year, but I don’t know when it will be.
Scott also hinted that the first film’s emperor, Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), is a possible inspiration for Lucius’ story. While the first film portrays the character very well, and Aurelius’ writings about stoicism have become fashionable by now, Scott is rather critical of the historical figure. “You have to be involved. [Aurelius] As with every demagogue today,” he said. “And I think he felt guilty about what he had done – hence his writings. Meditation”
when THR asked Scott if he ever considered a different fate for any of his major roles. Gladiator IIthe director said he didn’t. “No,” said the filmmaker. “Lucius had to live. Mom [Connie Nielsen] had to go The wicked man had to go.”
However, a sequel can’t be too soon, as the director is gearing up to make a Bee Gees biopic in early 2025. But if recent years have shown anything, it’s that Scott is quite successful and has no problem switching gears to tackle quickly. Another project.
