Bulgari has long held the record for the world’s thinnest watch, however it needed to fall further after the 2022 release of Richard Mille’s 1.75mm RM UP-01 Ferrari watch. The result is the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC, which features an “optimized” 40mm diameter case that is “even thinner than a coin.” Bulgari someway managed to suit all 170 components that power the wearable into its case, and a few of them could be seen working on the openwork dial.
Bulgari uses tungsten carbide to supply the watch’s motherboard (the part of the watch that serves as the bottom for all of the moving parts), as well as titanium to supply the bracelet, lugs and bezel. Unlike previous record-breaking Bulgari watches, this one is a certified chronometer. The certification is awarded by the Swiss organization Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC) and indicates that the watch has undergone extensive testing to make sure accurate timekeeping.
The watch has “datamatrix” engraved on the back, which Bulgari managing director Antoine Pin says provides a “digital watch experience.” It also gives owners access to “all product information,” including warranties and user manuals. However, it doesn’t specify whether this code connects you to an NFT like Bulgari’s previous ultra-thin watch.
The Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC costs $590,000. Only 20 models were produced, each of which comes with a case that routinely sets and winds the watch. I believe I’ll hold off until Bulgari buys a watch as thin as the spaghetti of my angel hair.
