A vibrant symbol of Paris’ bohemian lifestyle, Moulin Rouge’s famous windmill sails collapsed after a show on Thursday. No injuries were reported.
The incident happened shortly before 2 a.m., when the last performance of the night had finished and the audience had left the historic cabaret venue, known for its spectacular shows and dancers.
Moulin Rouge director Jean-Victor Clerico told French media that a “technical problem” caused a windmill sail and part of the cabaret’s illuminated sign to fall to the ground.
Despite the setback, Clerico said the Moulin Rouge show will continue, emphasizing the cabaret’s resilience and commitment to continuing its legacy. “The show goes on, that’s the most important thing,” he said.
Eric Legendre, mayor of Paris’ 18th arrondissement, confirmed on X that the structure is no longer in danger of collapsing. He expressed relief over the safety of both citizens and visitors to Paris.
Local Sylvain Lemmerle said it was lucky no one was hurt.
He told the Associated Press, “It’s going to be weird for tourists taking pictures without the sails. It looks a little bare, but it’s going to be changed, and it’s definitely going to be faster than Notre Dame.” Will.” Historic Paris Cathedral which was destroyed by fire in 2019.
