Princess Charlotte is growing up! Kate Middleton and Prince William have released a new portrait to mark their daughter’s ninth birthday — and despite past Photoshop issues with the royal family, it appears to be untouched.
“Happy 9th birthday, Princess Charlotte! 🎂 Thank you for all the kind messages today,” the Prince and Princess of Wales captioned the photo shared on Thursday.
The photo was taken by Middleton, who recently came under fire for sharing a photo of herself and her children on UK Mother’s Day on March 10.
According to one expert, there are three reasons why Charlotte’s snapshot looks unedited — natural colors, no flash and “no harsh shadows.”
“It’s shot in daylight, not with flash,” explained London photographer Glen Grattan. Daily mailcalling it a “beautiful, natural image”.
He also noted that the color is “not bleached” and “exactly what you want from a portrait.”
“She’s a good, talented photographer who loves taking pictures of her family,” he added of Middleton. “And you can see that Charlotte is nice and relaxed. Some kids are a bit shy posing around their parents, but she’s really relaxed and really natural.”
Additionally, she said it was a “nice follow-up” to Middleton’s latest photo of Prince Louis, which she shared last week to mark his sixth birthday.
The snapshot of Charlotte also appears to be a reference to the late Queen Elizabeth II, after whom it is named. (She was named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.)
The princess poses with pale pink Clematis Elizabeth flowers, one of the first plants to be named after the late monarch.
Middleton, who revealed in March that she had been diagnosed with cancer, has described herself as an avid photographer. While she has shared photos of her children – Charlotte and Louis have older brother Prince George, 10 – she is often referred to as the one behind the lens.
However, what has been different is the timing of the portrait’s release. And it’s a little unclear why the change happened.
Kensington Palace usually releases portraits of Wales’ children at midnight on their birthdays. However, both Charlotte and Louis’ photos were delayed this year.
Middleton has been spending more time with her family since revealing her health condition to the world. As the Post previously reported, she and William had a “difficult” conversation with George and Charlotte about the news, while they “sugarcoated” Louis.
“I’m sure it was a very difficult and very different conversation between the children,” Grant Harold, who worked for the current King Charles for seven years when he was Prince of Wales, told The Post exclusively.
“For Louis, for example, I’m sure the conversation was better than the conversation with George and Charlotte.”
“Older kids are more understanding, so I would imagine it’s a little more obvious, but of course staying positive, which is very important,” Herrold explained.
He added: “I’m sure the children will handle it as any child would be expected to handle it, but I think their parents are very calm and collected, and I think That it will rub off on the kids.”
