John Williams and Steven Spielberg; Hans Zimmer and Christopher Nolan; and Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and David Fincher. The relationship between a director and his favorite composer can have a real impact on the ultimate consequence of the film. It’s hard to assume Indiana Jones coming to the screen without Williams’ iconic theme song, and the identical goes for Fincher, whose 2010 film Social network could have been a completely different film if he hadn’t gotten the members of the band Nine Inch Nails to write down the primary full-length soundtrack for his Oscar-nominated film in regards to the founding of Facebook.
In a video interview highlighting their iconic music discography: Reznor and Ross talk GQ in regards to the experience of working with Fincher Social network and what it taught them in regards to the relationship between music and film. According to Reznor, after agreeing to work with Fincher on the film, the Oscar-winning duo gave Fincher a moodboard-style playlist of songs they felt would fit the “noble” and “tragic” tone of the script that they had read. One of those songs was a soulful instrumental featuring piano and electronics that became referred to as “Hand Covers Bruise,” and the remaining is history.
