Everything is greater in The Fast and the Furious franchise, including announcements. Our first look Quick X takes the shape of an enormous, almost four-minute trailer. The penultimate installment of the hugely successful motion series shall be released on May 19, and the primary look ticks all of the boxes: dialogue in regards to the importance of family, exploding expensive vehicles, plenty of international set pieces and Vin Diesel in a mechanic’s shirt.
Beginning with Rita Moreno, making her series debut as Abuela Toretto, giving an emotional speech about, you guessed it, family, the trailer introduces Jason Momoa’s soon-to-be Dante Quick X big bad (next to Cipher Charlize Theron). As clearly seen within the trailer, Dante is related to Hernan Reyes, the drug kingpin played by Joaquim de Almeida within the series’ breakout 2011 entry Fast five. Dante wants revenge and targets Dom’s family, including his son Brian, who is now eight years old.
While this installment looks as flashy and over-the-top as some of the more moderen features, it looks like an attempt was made to bring back the unique feel with the road racing scene. On the opposite hand, there is a scene where Dom’s muscle automobile is hit by two harpoons and two helicopters collide, so things aren’t entirely grounded in point of fact here.
Preview for Quick X continues the trend of turning ’90s rap classics into epic orchestral numbers, this time turning The Notorious BIG and Bone Thugs ‘n Harmony’s “Notorious Thugs” into an operatic brawl.
While the absence of Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs is keenly felt – there was a long-running feud between him and Vin –Quick X is filled with A-listers each recent – including Brie Larson and Moreno – and old, with the return of John Cena as Brother Dom and Jason Statham as villain-turned-ally Deckard Shaw. And of course, the “family” is around too, including Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jordana Brewster, and Sung Kang. (And yes, Kang and Statham share a scene where they confirm that Shaw “killed” Han.)
