will not return.
Hulu has canceled the drama series based on the book of the same name by Zakia Delilah Harris after just one season.
First in development in April 2020 before Tara Duncan signed on to serve as president of Disney’s BIPOC-focused studio Onyx Collective, the 10-episode satirical drama about the publishing world began its full run in September. The season left to impressive reviews. The series currently holds an 86 percent rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, though it seems to have been rejected by viewers, with a score of 50 percent among viewers.
Daniel Henderson () was originally set to serve as showrunner but was eventually replaced by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey. Executive producers for the series included Onyx Duncan, Rashida Jones, Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and Vic Godfrey, Adam Fischbach and writer Harris. Starring Sinclair Daniels, Ashley Murray, Brittany Adebumola, Hunter Parrish, Bellamy Young and Eric McCormack.
In an interview late last year — after the writers’ strike ended and producers were able to talk about the show — Readout and Hickey expressed optimism for a second season.
“Our brains are spinning. They’ve been spinning on season two for a year. It’s something we talk about constantly and it’s going to be really exciting to do,” Reddout said. Hickey added: “Since we’ve changed the ending, we want to show everyone what’s next. There’s so much more to explore.”
Disney-owned Hulu is the latest scripted original to get the ax, joining and others. With the peak TV bubble bursting, streamers across the industry are focused on right-sizing their scripted slates and budgets. Still awaiting word on their future at Hulu is Amy Schumer (who is expected to return), animated comedies, and, with the latter pair seemingly stuck in an endless limbo.
Onyx, meanwhile, is the first scripted series to be canceled for the Disney division. And both were already renewed and the comedy is awaiting a premiere date at Hulu.
