It was a “record-breaking night” for Netflix on Friday.
According to the streamer, about 60 million households tuned in to the Jack Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight. The event reached 65 million concurrent streams.
As for the Amanda Serrano vs. Katie Taylor co-main event, nearly 50 million households tuned in, with Netflix saying it’s likely to be “the most-watched women’s sports event in US history.” .
Joe Hands Promotions partnered with Netflix to distribute the event to 6,000 bars and restaurants across the United States, setting the record for commercial distribution of a combat sports event in the company’s more than 50-year history.
On X (formerly Twitter), #PaulTyson was the #1 trending topic worldwide, and #Serrano was #2 in the States, Brazil, Spain, and Canada.
The fight also broke financial records, grossing more than $18 million in ticket sales, doubling the previous records for combat sports in boxing and MMA and making it the biggest boxing match outside of Las Vegas in US history. gave
Paul vs. Tyson took place in Arlington, Texas, and saw the former YouTube star defeat the undisputed heavyweight champion. Expectations heading into the fight were incredibly high and only soared when Tyson slapped Paul during the weigh-ins earlier in the first day when the 27-year-old allegedly stepped on him.
“I was in my socks, and he had his shoes on,” Tyson said after the incident. “He stepped on my toe because he’s an ass.” I like to think it happened by accident. But now I think it must have been intentional. I was in a lot of pain. I had to get revenge.”
However, throughout the night, fans tuning into Netflix experienced technical issues, including buffering and freezing during the live event. And this wasn’t the first time the mega-streamer faced technical issues during a live event. Last year, the season four live reunion was delayed by more than an hour due to problems.
