The Locarno Film Festival is partnering with film fan social media site Letterboxd on a new award for this year’s edition.
The Letterboxd Piazza Grande Award will honor a film screening in the prestigious Piazza Grande, the Swiss festival’s 8,000-seat outdoor cinema in the heart of Locarno, that “expresses both the values and artistic qualities and commercial potential of today’s cinephile landscape. combines the international fair circuit.” The winning title will receive extensive editorial coverage on Letterboxd and Locarno’s film festival channels to help “create global awareness”.
A jury consisting of Letterboxed’s editorial staff and young accredited critics attending the festival will vote on the winner.
“Over the last decade, Letterboxed has become an essential site for film fans to share their favorite films,” says Locarno Artistic Director Giona A. Nazzaro. “We are proud to be the first international festival to join Letterboxd in awarding films in the official selection, in this case screened in the main center of our festival: under the stars on Piazza Grande. ”
Matthew Buchanan, co-founder of Letterboxd, added: “One of our guiding principles is to find ways for film fans to bring our audiences closer to the filmmakers working at the forefront of the medium. The inaugural Letter Boxed Pizza Grande Awards ceremony will be held on the evening of Saturday, August 17, at Pizza Grande.
The 77th Locarno Film Festival runs from August 7-17.
