Yorgos Lanthimos has all the time been an unusual director, but lately his strange tackle life has been taken to a new level due to his collaboration with Excellent creator Tony McNamara, who wrote the scripts for Lanthimos Favorite AND Poor things. But about his next film Types of kindnessLanthimos goes back to basics and creates a film unlike anything he’s done before: an anthology of three stories, each strange enough to draw viewers by itself.

Types of kindness is a meeting between Lanthimos and screenwriter Efthymis Filippou, who wrote his early movies equivalent to The killing of a sacred deer AND Lobster. Three separate stories feature an all-star forged including Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Defoe, Margaret Qualley and Hong Chau. While the trailer doesn’t give us much of an idea of what is going on on, the stark cinematography and unsettling mood make us feel like Lanthimos and Filippou are going back to the source of what made their first collaboration so unnerving.
With the trailer, we already know what each of these three stories shall be about. Searchlight Pictures describes the film as “a triptych with segments about a man with no choice trying to take control of his life; a policeman concerned that his wife, who was lost at sea, has returned and appears to be a different person; and a woman determined to find the specific person destined to become a wonderful spiritual leader.”
The anthology format is something new for Lanthimos, but he’s greater than prepared as he has experience directing short movies in between his movies. Types of Kindness are three segments of shorts that is not going to intertwine, but shall be thematically related to one another, creating a single work of art. It’s not your typical film, but nothing that Lanthimos and Filippou have created might be called “typical.”
Filippou has all the time had a tendency to create twisted narratives that always bend the rules of reality itself, and this film combines three of those threads into one film, stories that will be more at home in a collection of absurdist short stories or a season of sitcoms. The Twilight Zone than a night at the cinema. But with so many famous actors – including three returning Poor things co-stars — even Lanthimos fans barely more conventional movies will find something to like in it.
