The Cannes Film Festival presented the official poster of the 77th edition.
Cannes likes to seek advice from the history of cinema in its official merchandise and this 12 months’s poster is not any exception. Contains a scene from Rhapsody in Augusta Japanese classic by the late Akira Kurosawa, which premiered out of competition at Cannes in 1991.
In the film, Kurosawa’s penultimate role as a director, grandmother, and victim of the Nagasaki bombing, passes on to her grandchildren and American nephew the assumption in love and honesty as a bulwark against war and violence.
The poster suits nicely into the theme of this 12 months’s Cannes festival, which is becoming an increasing number of Japanese. Earlier this week, Cannes announced that this 12 months it’s going to award the honorary Palme d’Or to Japanese anime house Studio Ghibli (Boy and heron, A spiritual trip), for the primary time the French festival awarded the best award to an organization slightly than to a person artist.
Over the years, Cannes posters have been classic (last 12 months’s photo showed a young Catherine Deneuve Deneuve in 1968 standing on a beach near Saint Tropez), cute (the 2013 issue showed Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward kissing in 1963) and cheeky (the 2021 poster featured director Spike Lee together with his glasses up, gazing thoughtfully on the palm trees in Cannes, like his character Mars Blackmon within the film She should have it.)
Sometimes they were controversial. The 2017 poster sparked outrage online over allegations that the image of the young, gyrating Claudia Cardinale was altered to make the Italian star appear slimmer.
The 2024 poster will look down on this 12 months’s jury, which he heads Barbie doll director Greta Gerwig, during which jury members evaluate the movies competing for the Palme d’Or.
The 77th Cannes Festival will begin on May 14 with a performance by Quentin Dupieux Act two starring Léa Seydoux and Vincent Lindon. It will last until May 24.
