Sidney Sweeney is calling out Hollywood for her “other women empowering women” movement, claiming the whole idea is an illusion.
The “Anyone But You” star, 27, spoke about the power women have in the entertainment industry during an interview with the magazine’s Vanity Fair. 2025 Hollywood issue.
“It’s very disheartening to see women tearing other women down,” she told the outlet in an interview published Wednesday.
“Especially when women who are successful in other avenues of their industry see young talent working really hard — these hoping to achieve whatever dreams they have – and then trying to discredit and discredit anything they’ve done. are.”
“This whole industry, all the people say, ‘Women are about empowering other women.’ None of that is happening,” Sweeney added. “It’s all fake and a front for everyone else — that they say behind everyone’s back.”
The “Euphoria” star shared her thoughts on why some women can tear each other down in private while publicly pretending to embrace the virtues of female empowerment.
“I mean, there’s a lot of studies and different opinions on the reasoning behind it,” Sweeney continued.
“I’ve read that all our lives, we’ve been raised — and it’s a generational problem — to believe that only one woman can be at the top. There’s a woman who can get a man. There’s a woman who can be. Maybe, I don’t know, whatever. Then everyone else feels like they have to fight each other or, instead of bringing this one woman down, let’s all lift each other up.
Sweeney also said that she herself is “still trying to figure it out”, explaining, “I’m doing my best here. Why am I being attacked?”
The empowerment of women in the entertainment industry — or the lack of it — came up during a Vanity Fair interview regarding the controversy that arose earlier this year when a veteran Hollywood producer criticized Sweeney’s acting skills and physical appearance. The look was followed by public criticism.
“There’s one actress that everybody likes now — Sidney Sweeney. I don’t get Sidney Sweeney,” producer Carol Baum said at a screening of her 1988 film Dead Ringers in April. The Daily Mail.
The filmmaker, whose credits include “Father of the Bride” and “Shining Through,” told the audience that she watched Sweeney’s 2023 hit romantic comedy “Anyway But You” on a plane because she “wanted to know That’s who he is and why everyone is talking about him.” Baum called the film “unwatchable”.
“She’s not pretty, she can’t act,” Baum said of Sweeney.
An adjunct professor at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, he asked students in one of his classes to “explain” Sweeney’s appeal.
“I said to my class, ‘Explain this girl to me. She’s not pretty, she can’t act. Why is she so hot?’ No one had an answer,” she continued.
Shortly after Baum’s comments went viral, a representative for Sweeney called the producer’s comments “embarrassing.”
“How sad that a woman who is in a position to share her expertise and experience would choose to attack another woman instead,” the representative told The Post. “If that’s what she’s learned in her decades in the industry and sees fit to teach her students, that’s a shame.”
“To do injustice to a fellow female producer speaks volumes for Ms. Baum’s character,” the rep added.
Baum received a barrage of backlash online and later said he regretted his remarks. TMZ It’s not usually his MO to trash an actor.
