The sunglasses market seemed to have develop into reasonably stagnant over the previous few years. Most of the styles appearing on social media ranged from classic aviator and wayfarer styles to more nostalgic and sporty ’90s-style silhouettes (we will thank Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber for that). However, this 12 months has seen a big shift on this space, with viral aesthetics reminiscent of the mob wife and dark academia in addition to entertainment influencing trends. Now there may be a large range of shapes and styles to select from when it comes to protecting your eyes on the sunny days ahead.
On the more demure side of the spectrum, the continued reign of quiet luxury has seen a more simplistic and bare sunglasses appear in the marketplace. Think rimless styles and sleek and slim rectangular frames. “I think people are more appreciative of timeless design and are looking for sunglasses that will last a season or a trend,” says Patty Perreira, co-founder of the sunglasses brand Barton Perreira. “Quiet luxury is becoming more of a lifestyle than a trend.”
As this simplicity evolves and settles, a fresh wave of maximalism has hit the style shores, materializing within the aforementioned flashy and gilded mob wife look, in addition to a colourful and quirky retro vibe. “I think popularity [mod] silhouettes are the result of an influx of media inspired by the 1960s and 1970s – e.g Feud: Capote vs. Swans AND Royal Palm are unique examples of creating an entire world based on these characters and their aesthetics,” says Kim Nemser, director of product and supply chain at the corporate Warby Parker. “It’s no surprise that consumers are looking to incorporate some of these retro nods into their current wardrobes.”
And that is just the tip of the glasses iceberg. Ahead are the sunglasses trends that will probably be the preferred in 2024.
Poor secretary
“I would say that the latest trend is the silhouette of a petite secretary, both with glasses and sunglasses,” says Poppy Lissiman, owner of the eponymous store sunglasses label, nodding to the “corpcore” style bubbling on the surface of the style. “I would attribute it to going back to work and dressing for the office for aesthetics.”
Mafia wife
Lissiman notes that whether you prefer it or not, the wealthy mob wives trend is not going anywhere – and it’s coming after your sunglasses. While there are several ways to accentuate your look with glasses, it is best with larger, gold-plated and logged-out frames. When selecting a mode, she suggests selecting one which “fits your face shape and where you feel most comfortable. I have small, angular facial features, so I usually fit into curvy or oversized shapes.”
Space Age
Also on the more over-the-top side of the spectrum is a futuristic space age aesthetic that hits hard on sunglasses. Lissiman attributes this Judy Jetson-appropriate look to the Y2K boom that has dominated the past few years. The daring style includes oversized, wraparound styles with acetate or rubber finishes and daring colours.
Retro queen
“This year we are seeing a trend of classic cat eyes and oval silhouettes,” says Nemser. “I love that these shapes come in several different aesthetics, from colorful acetate like pop turtles or classic jet black, to sleek metal frames, providing multiple entry points for eyewear consumers who want to participate in trends while still feeling like themselves.”
No hoop
“Overall, I think we’ll see more lightweight rimless styles with beautiful ombré lenses, as well as thicker acetate frames but with a thinner profile for comfort,” says Perreira. “Lightweight rimless sunglasses are perfect when you realize you will be wearing them for a protracted time. No one wants dents on the bridge of their nose or pain at the highest of their ears from heavy, uncomfortable glasses. Indeed, the rimless look offers a range of shape options, from the larger, rounded options of the Nineteen Seventies to smaller, more modern geometric ones.
