Stephen Colbert closed out Los Angeles’ annual PaleyFest TV festival on Sunday afternoon, when he sat down with comedian Ben Schwartz to discuss his profession and times. The Late Show The desk
During a wide-ranging chat contained in the Dolby Theater — which ranged from Colbert’s start on the Chicago improv scene to his tenure as a Sunday school teacher and his love of fantasy movies — Schwartz asked the host if he ever Want to get back into acting? In which he went to school.
“I used to be working full time until I had it. The Late Show” Colbert recalled, as he had been in character. The Colbert Report And The Daily Show. “The weirdest thing about getting a job is from my manager, James ‘Baby Doll’ Dixon, when he said, ‘Hey, it’s you’. And I went, ‘Me?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, do you wish to do it?’ And I’m like, ‘James, I’m an actor.’ Like, if I do the show, it’s the primary time in my life that I have not been in a role the entire time. And, he goes, ‘Yeah, you may be an actor anytime, anybody you may.’ Will not offer this job.’ And I went, ‘Oh that is so true,’ then it felt like an adventure to me.
Almost nine years later, he continued, “It’s been an incredible adventure, I would not trade it for anything. But I’ve all the time been an actor. And so at the back of my head, I’m like I’m like, ‘I ponder if I’m going to do it again,’ because I did it for 30 years.
Colbert revealed his dream role, but said, “I’m too old for the role I’ve all the time wanted to play. I’m not like fishing for somebody to solid me, I am unable to do it…. I’ve all the time wanted to play a Richard Rich form of character, form of like a Thomas More fan. A Man for All Seasons. Or now at my age, I can play a personality called Common Man, which is within the play, but not within the movie. They all the time cut them out of plays once they try this, but I do not know why because I adore it.
The pair also had an exchange through which Colbert bounced ideas off — “If it’s something that’s really difficult, I’ll call Jon Stewart and my wife, Evie. As many times as they both said, ‘No, don’t do that’; if Evie doesn’t go, I’m sure Jones won’t say, it’s too far” – and his nightly show ritual, through which he tells the audience the identical 4 jokes before the show starts. Includes chanting and shaking everyone’s hand. Backstage
He added that if he writes and rehearses the show on time, “I DJ. We activate just a little speaker and I’m going, ‘OK, what does everybody want to hear?’ We listen to the music before we move on, because I even have to go from author/producer to performer….I even have to transform into the one that exists only to embody it, and only in my body and in my head I’m not. We’ve been doing a number of Eisley Brothers these days.
Colbert also explained what he likes in regards to the job “I like the concept that I’m throwing a celebration for people and I would like to be the host, I would like them to be comfortable. I even have There is a bar, I rarely use it but when anyone wants a cocktail I even have a bar.
Schwartz also touched on the intimacy of the present late-night hosts, particularly his Strike Force Five Podcasts, and the way the “late night wars” seem to be a thing of the past.
“Everybody has their reasons for how they feel about their job and the competition, things like that. I don’t blame anybody, their feelings are valid. Those are their feelings, but I Always thought so few people know what it’s like to do that, don’t I meet Fallon in the secret room we know in Midtown and drink? What do we do instead,” Colbert replied . “I’m lucky enough to have it with Jon Stewart, but I’ve had it with any of them,” as he teased, “except [John] Oliver.”
