Doctor Who Star Nikoti Gutwa is getting candid about his battle with acceptance.
The actor, who faced backlash for his role as the primary black lead of the hit show, recently opened up in an interview. Attitude Magazine About what he has learned through the years about what he deserves in life.
“We’ve been trained to be like, ‘If I’m not extraordinary, I’m not loved.’ Definitely, I think it was my thing,” shared Gatwa. “So, yeah, I think I’m just learning like, ‘Oh, you’re allowed to love.’ You don’t have to be the best or aspire to the term, ‘black excellence’ what’s the point?”
He continued, “There’s a whole lot of white mediocrity that is celebrated, and black people, we’ve to be absolutely flawless to get half. [that] So anyway, I’m slowly pulling myself out of it and being like, ‘Never mind. You only deserve love for the current.’ And it has taught me to like quite a bit in a weird way.
Elsewhere within the interview, Barbie The actor said he couldn’t understand how anyone might be “so angry over something so unnecessary” regarding his casting because the doctor. However, he noted that it’s a part of a shift he’s seeing with diversity within the entertainment industry.
“We are seeing a change in casting, positions of power and status quo,” Gutwa explained. “I mean, not a quick shift, things might tip a little faster the other way, but you see people getting screwed because things are changing.”
Before portraying the Fifteenth Doctor within the hit UK series, The Sex education The alum said The Hollywood Reporter in July 2023 that he was avoiding any scrutiny.
“The British press can be very cynical,” Gutva said on the time. “I just have to focus on the job and stay true to the Doctor: a mad scientist alien who has adventures and cares about everyone.”
