Local media reported that six suspects were arrested on Wednesday in reference to the murder of South African footballer Luke Fleurs, who was shot when his automobile was hijacked in Johannesburg last week.
The 24-year-old former junior international, who played for the country’s hottest club Kaizer Chiefs, was shot in the chest at a gas station last Wednesday and the attackers drove away in his vehicle.
Police said six suspects were arrested early Wednesday morning in Soweto. Fleurs’ vehicle was found on Monday.
“Police believe the suspects are part of a car hijacking syndicate in Gauteng and searches are ongoing for additional suspects,” said Gauteng Police Commissioner Lt Gen Tommy Mthombeni. IOL.co.za.
The suspects are expected to seem in court on Friday and face charges of murder and kidnapping.
Fleurs was waiting to be served by a gas station attendant when he was confronted by two armed men who shot him in the chest. Upon arrival at the hospital, he was pronounced dead.
Centre-back Fleurs played every minute for South Africa at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and was included in the squad for the World Cup qualifier against Ethiopia later that yr, although he didn’t play a single match.
South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, expressed “sadness that another human life has been cut short due to violent crime.”
