Shawn Mendes has revealed why he decided to come clean about past pregnancy scares in his new song “Why Why Why.”
Mendes, 26, opened up about singing and scaring in a new profile. The New York Times on Thursday.
The singer revealed that a colleague suggested that he add experience to his lyrics for the lyrics. After initially balking at the suggestion, he took notes.
“Then I was like, ‘Why am I doing this?'” he said. “I wanted to break down whatever walls remained between me and the listeners.”
In the song, Mendes sings, “I thought I was gonna be a father / Shake me up, I’m still a baby / Sometimes I cry for my mother.”
Mendes told the Times that the pregnancy scare “taught me a lot as a man.”
The Grammy-nominated singer did not say who his partner was during the song or during his conversation. However, in the interview, he began talking about his ex Camila Cabello, 27, “almost without prompting” after discussing a pregnancy scare.
Starr said whenever the public thinks she and Cabello are “weirdly against each other.”
Mendes still talks to Cabello about music and the important things in his life in general. “But honestly, if anything were to happen to my family and if anything were to happen to me, she would probably be the first person I call to this day,” he said.
“Our relationship is teaching me what love means, in a big way.”
Mendes and Cabello dated for over two years until their breakup in 2021. They briefly reunited in 2023 before splitting again in June of that year. Mendes is rumored to be dating Sabrina Carpenter but Denied their relationship was ever romantic.
The “Mercy” singer recently opened up about his private life. On Monday, he opened up about his sexuality during a performance at Red Rocks in Colorado.
“Man, I’m figuring it out like everybody else,” he said, introducing another of his new songs, “The Mountain.”
“I really don’t know sometimes and I know other times. And it feels really scary, because we live in a society that has so much to say.
Mendes’ frankness was applauded by the crowd.
“Some days, my heart’s changed / You can say what you gotta say,” he sings in “The Mountain.” “You can say I’m too young / You can say I’m too old / You can say I like girls or boys / Whatever fits your mold.”
Speaking to the crowd in Colorado, Mendes added, “I’m trying to be really brave and just allow myself to be human and feel things. And that’s all I’m about right now. I want to say.”
