Saoirse Ronan wants to see more badass female characters represented on screen after acting The Outer.
The Irish actress has had a career full of angsty but relatable roles for young women in films Ladybird, Little Women And Brooklyn. Before turning 30, she received four Oscar nominations. Ronan recently spoke. Ale and revealed what it was like to play Rona, a complex character, struggling to find herself. The Outer.
“I was so ready for it. I felt pretty confident in my ability, but also pretty confident in who I was,” she said. “I didn’t feel like I was being held back by just needing to play people I liked.”
Ronan recalls seeing these traits in other characters on screen, which helped inspire him. “I really responded to Lena Dunham’s characters. GirlsWho are sometimes arseholes, but we all have that ability. I just started watching. Hexand I’m like, ‘These girls are selfish. They include themselves. They have massive egos, but they always have redeeming qualities.
He continued, “We’re so used to filtering our personalities, reducing them to one line on Instagram or Twitter. And to have the opportunity to go, ‘Look, this person is fully formed. can have and it can have its quirks and its redeeming qualities, and let’s respect all of that’ — I’m at a point in my life where I’m like, ‘This is what I want to see on screen. I am.’
Since working on the film – and behind the camera as well, as his first production credit – the experience has continued. move on It helped to see addiction as a disease and not as a character flaw.
“If you don’t have your mind fundamentally altered by a substance, you don’t understand why they can’t just choose not to live that life. You don’t understand why they don’t want, or don’t feel like it’s fair to pick you on it,” he said. “There’s a lot of confusion that arose from that, and resentment, which I had, and still have to a certain extent.”
The role was personal for Ronan, as she said she has loved ones who have also experienced addiction, but by “stepping into someone’s psyche” she can heal by “taking some of the sting out of it”. is
