Phil Foden has revealed he checked an item off his bucket list after scoring on the Bernabeu and declared his long-range strike was probably the greatest goals he has ever scored.
The midfielder scored a career-high 22 goals this season with a 20-yard shot in Manchester City’s 3-3 draw with Real Madrid on Wednesday.
Foden believes he has a “special ability” to search out the back of the online and said he was pleased with the result ahead of next week’s second leg on the Etihad Stadium.
He said: “It’s one of the best goals I’ve scored. I always have this particular skill around the penalty area that allows me to see myself scoring a lot of goals – it’s one of those that you practice on the training pitch after training. When I received it on the edge of the box, I thought, “why not give it a try?” Fortunately, I was given a chance in the game to do just that. I made good contact with him and when he went into the top corner I was delighted. It’s one of the greatest feelings to score a goal in one of the best stadiums in the world. I can say I’ve already crossed it off my bucket list.
“I seem to be in good shape this year in terms of scoring points. When you score points, your confidence is really high. He plays more centrally and in front of the goal… I attribute this to my determination and desire to score goals. There’s someone in the box who believes he’s going to score a lot of goals, and I always believe – no matter what – that I’ll get a chance in the game and hopefully I can get past him.
Pep Guardiola’s men took the lead after two minutes through Bernardo Silva, trailed 2-1 and then 3-2 ahead before Fede Valverde equalized and Foden savored the match, imagining what it was like for other City fans.
He added: “It was a great match – one of the best I have ever been a part of. Playing against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu was a special feeling. Watching such a match must have been a fan’s dream. It was a very intense match – maybe we scored too early, we couldn’t control them and we gave away some sloppy balls. They are always dangerous in a counterattack against Vini [Jr] and Rodrygo – they have incredible pace and skills. They hurt us.
“It was an up-and-down match. We kept our composure when we got behind and just played our football, grew into the game – I feel like we’ve come a long way to come here and do what we did. We could have controlled the game better when we were leading 3-2, but we are playing against one of the best teams in the world. You will make mistakes and what matters is how you respond to them. Even the best teams in the world come here and fight. A draw is not a bad result – there are a lot of positives and a lot of things we can work on. Now we’re going again.”
