Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has been named the Football Writers’ Association Men’s Player of the Year, while City forward Khadija Shaw won the women’s award.
England international Foden, 23, who has scored 24 goals in all competitions this season, including his goal in the Club World Cup final, finished ahead of Arsenal’s Declan Rice and his City team-mate Rhodri. 42% of the votes have been obtained.
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and Chelsea forward Cole Palmer make up the rest of the top six, while Foden is the last four to win the award, following Erling Holland’s triumph in 2023 and Ruben Dias’ triumph. City won both awards for the second time in five years, with Jamaican international Shaw claiming the women’s award after a season in which she became the club’s all-time leading women’s scorer.
Shaw, whose season ended prematurely with a foot injury last week, is the Women’s Super League’s top scorer with 21 goals, and was voted ahead of Chelsea’s Lauren James and City’s Alex Greenwood. Two more City players joined the top six as Yui Hasegawa came fourth and goalkeeper Khaira Keating came in sixth, sandwiching Brighton’s Elizabeth Terland.
“I am very proud and honored to receive this award and it is a special honor to be recognized in this way,” Shaw said. “I also want to thank all my colleagues. They give me chances to score goals and I could not have won this award without them.
Foden and Shaw will receive their awards at a ceremony on May 16. Foden’s City are second in the Premier League, a point behind Arsenal with a game in hand, while Shaw’s side lead the WSL by six points. Chelsea who have played a game less.
