INhatWhat what does an “excessive, fanatically obsessive” Peloton user seem like? To discover, I talked to several long-time Peloton users. Then there’s Jessica Fernandez, who I already mentioned, who has read biographies of several Peloton instructors. There’s Oz introducing his 13-year-old daughter to Peloton. Then there’s Albert G., who raided TJ Maxx for a set of Peloton dumbbells, yoga blocks, a water bottle, and cycling clothing.
The die-hard Peloton members I talked to don’t necessarily construct their lives around Peloton, however the company becomes a part of their lifestyle. Bicycles are placed in living rooms, offices and garages – sometimes accompanied by a treadmill or Peloton weights. Most said they needed at the least a 30-minute workout about five to seven times a week. Many of them had streaks lasting lots of of weeks. Some people began signing up their children for Peloton. Many fans said they buy Peloton clothing, follow instructors on Instagram, and even read books by said instructors. When I asked who their favorite instructor was, many had difficulty naming only one. Ben Alldis particularly was a popular selection as a consequence of his musical decisions and laid-back style. Adrian Williams, Jess King and Ally Love were also mentioned continuously. (Oddly enough, only two mentioned Rigsby.)
In other words, the people I talked to were pretty peculiar – and crucial thing that they had in common was that the Peloton platform just works for them. However, determining which parts made the platform sticky was a bit harder.
“The best part is the instructors. They are like gold. And the fact that they are able to create so much original content,” says Fernandez.
“I’ve had bikes and treadmills where when you get tired or bored you just get off and do something else. [But] when you take a class, even if it’s pre-recorded, you feel a sense of responsibility to the instructor like no other,” adds Drew McManus, who began using Peloton in 2019 and has since taken about 4,000 classes. “It’s weird. You get up someday and realize you are following all of them on social media.
In addition to the instructors, the sense of community with Peloton users is very real. You see this the moment you begin pedaling, through the Leaderboard, where you may see all the opposite people collaborating in the identical class in real time. You may high five people in the identical class. You’ll also see some hashtags throughout the classes – some based on user identity, geographic location, and interests (e.g. #PeloDoctors, #PelotonMothers, etc.) and others based on instructors (e.g. #JessKingCollective, #BooCrew). These are designed to allow you to find other fans or friends to ride live with. Hashtags spread to other social media platforms. There are also several hundred groups on Facebook. (My favorite name is #435amTribe – Mothercluckers.)
“The number of individuals pedaling for Jesus or, you realize, #Pelo4Wine – that is just such a big selection of people that would otherwise probably need to kill one another in the event that they met at a random bar. But you may get a high five from them here,” says Chris Messina, an investor and avid Peloton user.
Not everyone I talked to used these features extensively. Some, like Fernandez, have as a substitute found more community through comments on blogs like Pelo Buddy, a site for enthusiasts that provides news, advice and suggestions. Some joined subgroups inside other fan communities. Many have checked out the Peloton subreddit at one point or one other. Amanda Hasaka, who began using Peloton through the pandemic, has been running a thread in a private podcast group for years, collecting all of the strength classes that do not involve burpees or other high-impact exercises. McManus interacted with other Peloton users in a small group on Slack and Mastodon. Others, nonetheless, have brought their real friends, family, and associates into the community by being a “Peloton person.”
Another highlight is the live activities, especially the holiday-themed rides. Instead of the annual Turkey Trot, where you run an in-person 5K on Thanksgiving, Peloton hosts the Turkey Burn, an annual live ride. In the case of the 2023 Turkey Burn, Peloton’s servers crashed under the flood of users trying to affix, prompting an apology from McCarthy. More than 37,000 people were willing, even willing, to undergo a workout on a holiday famous for gluttony. This is something.
Then comes Homecoming, an annual event Peloton hosts to thank its members. It’s more of a convention, crammed with special classes, product announcements, and panels with instructors. In that spirit, Peloton recently reopened its studios in New York and London so members can visit and take part in its classes. As of this writing, all Peloton Studios New York classes are fully booked for the subsequent month.
