When Nicole Kidman was presented with the AFI Life Achievement Award, she spent a large part of her speech thanking the directors she’s worked with over the years. Respect for the job, though, doesn’t mean she aspires to step behind the camera herself.
“I think I’d be a terrible director because I always have so many ideas. A director has to make choices, and that’s not my strong suit,” Kidman said. The Hollywood Reporter Saturday night on the AFI red carpet, noting that a producer’s duties are very much aligned with his interests. “I love being emotional and supporting voices and reading a script and going, ‘I love this script,’ or seeing someone and going, ‘I love this actor, I love this director, I love this. How can I support?’ And maybe they did nothing. [before]But I want to go after them. This is what I love to do; It excites me, and it really makes me happy. I like to shine a light on other people or help them do so.”
Through her Blossom Films, Kidman has produced projects including big little lie, Nine perfect strangers, The Undoing, Love and death, Special Ops: Tigress And Expat.
Inside the tribute event, the star explained his desire to shine a light on others, telling the crowd inside the Dolby Theater in Hollywood: “There are so many exciting young directors and voices that are completely original. And they need to be heard, and they have a lot to say. We need to give them a chance to say it and be heard, and I’m here, I’m ready to roll up my sleeves. I’m always here to support those voices Kidman also listed the names of all her previous directors and thanked them individually during her acceptance speech.
Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon, Morgan Freeman, Naomi Watts, Zoe Saldana, Aaron Sorkin, Zac Efron, Miles Taylor, Joey King, Mike Myers and husband Keith Urban were all on hand to honor Kidman at the event, when she received It was heavy to do. Life Achievement Award at just 56 years old.
“When they told me Meryl got it around the same time, I was like, ‘Okay, that’s okay, that’s cool,'” Kidman said. THR. “But with that, you go, I’ll take what you give me because work-wise, I just like to work.”
