Nev Schulman said he was “lucky” to be alive after revealing he broke his neck in a motorcycle and truck crash on Monday.
The host took to Instagram on Saturday to share that he was on his way to pick up his son from school when the accident happened.
He captioned the post, “I never let my son pick up his son from school on a bike. “Actually, in some ways, I’m glad I didn’t. I was alone on impact. Me and the truck. And then I guess the floor. I was alone and unconscious. And then I came to. Maybe I was fine (I wasn’t). Maybe I could do my long run on Thursday too (I couldn’t).
Shulman added that thankfully he is “not paralyzed” and has a stable fracture in his neck. “I broke my neck. C5 and C6 to be exact. Stable fracture. I’m not paralyzed,” he explained. “My hands were a question mark for a minute, but the human body is incredible and so are humans.”
Elsewhere in her Instagram post, which included pictures of her in the hospital and X-rays of her neck, the alum expressed her sincere appreciation for the medical team that took care of her.
“The incredible knowledge and care from everyone in the medical community has been remarkable. Starting with EMS and all the way to the Southampton Emergency Room and Stony Brook ICU,” he wrote. “It’s hard to feel sorry for myself when I hear from doctors how many people with similar injuries will never walk again.”
Shulman said the accident put into perspective “how life can change in an instant.” It also made him extra grateful for the memories he made during a family fishing day trip the Sunday before the accident.
“I’m blessed to be here, alive, standing and hugging my family, the possibility of a full recovery. And I’m really starting to understand the meaning of gratitude,” he said. “For things big and small before the crash, and now everything is moving forward.”
The producer continued, “We didn’t plan to go fishing last Sunday and my instinct was to refuse to plan a day trip, but looking back a week later I’m so glad I did. I said yes.”
