Major comic book adaptations run the gamut from zombie thrillers to gritty superhero satires and even madcap teen dramas, but “alien murder mystery medical drama” probably doesn’t come to mind. However, in 2021, this complicated premise not only became a reality, but became one of the most overslept sci-fi series of the decade. Now its first two seasons are streaming on Netflix, and it’s value catching up when season 3 airs on Syfy and Peacock.
Alien inhabitant relies on the Dark Horse comic book by Peter Hogan and Steven Parkhouse, but because it transitioned from page to screen, the story of an extraterrestrial posing as a small-town doctor modified from serious and introspective to a wacky, off-balance fish aquatic tale. The series tells the story of Dr. Harry Vanderspiegle (secretly an alien who killed and replaced the original Dr. Vanderspiegle), but his reclusive life is interrupted when the good people of Patience, Colorado ask him to take over as the local doctor – and help solve the first doctor murder.
He plays Dr. Vanderspiegle (each human and alien). Firefly star and prolific voice actor Alan Tudyk. Alien inhabitant that is his first leading role and he’s making the most of it. He delivers each line of dialogue as if he’s trying to grasp the words, while at the same time being the voice of an evil but endearing internal monologue.
“I just want to kill everyone,” Alan Tudyk said Reciprocal in 2021 “and I’m just terrible. I’m terrible at pretending to be human – something I would like to destroy.
Harry can use his natural camouflage to cover his true form, nevertheless it just isn’t perfect. In Patience, Max, the mayor’s nine-year-old son, sees him as an alien and decides to disclose Harry’s true identity, turning them into mortal enemies and providing much of the early comedy and drama.
Even though it’s science fiction, Alien inhabitant it also finds room for authentic human stories that would not be out of place in a mid-Twenty first century small-town drama: a bartender with dashed Olympic dreams, a crumbling marriage, a consistently questioned sheriff’s deputy, and even a mysterious child. Although they’re an added focus at the starting, Harry by some means becomes the key to solving each subplot.
The structure can also be classic network television. There are many standalone episodes that provide a break from the season-long stories and permit the characters to loosen up a bit. In one episode, Harry attends a UFO convention, angrily criticizes the alien costumes of the attendees, and finally ends up babbling away Ancient Aliens guy.
As the series progresses, Harry realizes that he’s becoming more human than he thinks, and that he may not even wish to destroy humanity much more. In season two, as more of Patience learns Harry’s true identity, the show focuses less on Harry vs. humans and more on Harry and his people versus external forces.
Later seasons feature guest stars from across the galaxy, many of them from Tudyk’s Whedonverse past. His Firefly co-star Nathan Fillion voices the octopus (a distant cousin of Harry’s alien species) and Dollhouse Enver Gjokaj appears as an alien hybrid. If you watch rather a lot of science fiction, ultimately you may recognize someone.
As all, Alien inhabitant it’s silly, small and rather a lot of fun. It seems like an artifact of a less complicated era of television, when a comic book book adaptation didn’t mechanically mean a big production budget and a super-serious drama. Sometimes all you would like is a beloved character actor and a improbable story.
