May Mobility is slowly advancing its driverless capabilities. The startup this week began a small-scale deployment of autonomous shuttles, which will guide themselves along a fixed route without a human safety driver. May will initially deploy one to two autonomous Toyota Sienna minivans to transport employees and “invited guests” within a 2-square-mile area of the city.
This is the second city where May is conducting a so-called “Driver Out” operation. In December 2023, the startup began driverless testing in a planned community in Sun City, Arizona, where it is currently transporting passengers for free.
MayMobility co-founder and CEO Edwin Olson said launching a “drive-out” operation in another city in less than a year demonstrates the scalability of its technology. It also expands the driverless system’s capabilities in challenging weather, high speeds and busy traffic, he added.
May Mobility says it hopes to expand driverless testing to Peachtree Corners, Georgia, in 2025, where the startup is currently testing with a safety driver.
The startup plans to bring its AVs to the Lyft app in Atlanta next year as part of a multi-year partnership with the ride-hailing firm.
