In the next He-Man movie, the ’80s action hero will get an entirely new backstory that borrows from Superman while acknowledging the last live-action He-Man adventure. According to To Varietynew Masters of the Universe will debut on June 26, 2026, and will feature an all-new story, unfamiliar to anyone who lived through the 80s, 90s, early aughts, or even its 2020s Netflix incarnation. Loved Heyman.
While this new premise is a radical departure from the He-Man mythos, it looks like it might work. Here’s what’s new. Masters of the Universe The film is about why this is such a big departure, and why it fits perfectly with the strange world of Greyskull.
Directed by Travis KnightBumblebeethe Official summary For the new Masters of the Universe Is:
“Masters of the Universe Introduces a 10-year-old Prince Adam, who crashes on Earth in a spaceship and is separated from his magically powered sword – the only link to his home on Eternia…for nearly two decades. After tracking him down, Prince Adam is executed. Back in space to defend your home planet against Skeletor’s evil forces. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam must first uncover the mystery of his past and become a human: the most powerful man in the universe!
Prince Adam – He-Man’s more chilled-out alter ego from the classic cartoon – would maroon on Earth and grow up here before discovering the power of Gray Skull. Like Superman after the destruction of Krypton, it seems that Adam will be a humanoid alien among humans, but unlike Kal-El, he will have a home planet to return to.
The classic cartoon didn’t (mostly) mess with Earth, and He-Man’s powers were “revealed” to him on the planet Eternia, where most of the action takes place. However, visiting Earth is not entirely without precedent in the He-Man canon.
Although Adam was not raised on Earth, the filming series proved that his mother was actually from Earth. Known as Queen Marlena on Eternia, Adam’s mother was a human astronaut named Marlena Glenn. In “Tyla’s Quest”, it was revealed that she crash-landed on Eternia, eventually married King Randor, and then had children, He-Man and She-Ra.
This backstory gives He-Man an inherent connection to Earth. The new movie reverses his backstory by trapping Adam on Earth instead of putting his mother on Eternia. There is also another precedent for He-Man’s Earth shenanigans. In 1987’s Live Action Masters of the Universe, He-Man and friends find themselves transported to Earth thanks to the “Cosmic Key”, which unlocks dimensions between worlds. Most of the plot takes place on Earth, not Eternia.
In a way, it looks like the new film will pay homage to both the 1987 film and the classic cartoon. The man may have a new story, but he still looks as stupid as he should.
