Erik ten Hague says Manchester United will back Marcus Rashford after the forward hit out at social media this season to highlight “months of abuse”.
Rashford has scored just eight goals for United this season after netting 30 goals in all competitions for Ten Hague last year.
United have collectively endured a torrid campaign this season and Ten Hague admits Rashford “can do better” after setting such high standards last season.
But the Dutchman said he had “sympathy” for the England international after a difficult year on and off the pitch.
Rashford is unlikely to return to the Manchester United squad as they host Burnley and Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday, and the Old Trafford manager said: “I think he needs help.
“Last year, he had a great season. I think the best season of his career, he scored 30 goals, you see what he’s capable of.
“This season, he didn’t perform and people criticized a lot. We have to back him and everyone should support him to get back to last year’s level.
“We all know what he’s capable of, we all have to support him and push him forward. He can do better than this year. We saw last year when he was really outstanding.
The 26-year-old took to social media late Thursday night to say “enough is enough” after criticism of his appearance and private life this season.
After the United fan page defended Rashford, insisting his behavior had been “disgusting” and “cruel”, the player hit back late last night.
“I appreciate your support!” Rashford wrote after being quoted in the post early on Friday morning. “This is abuse and has been going on for months.”
