Liverpool squandered a likelihood to return to the top of the Premier League after drawing one other thriller at Old Trafford against Manchester United.
Manager Jurgen Klopp and his players will wonder how they did not avenge their FA Cup quarter-final defeat last month, paying the price for wasting quite a few possibilities after losing to the hosts for long periods.
Liverpool had only a goal from Luis Diaz and an almost complete advantage in the first half, wherein that they had 15 shots to none from United, whose manager Erik ten Hag was grateful for the visitors’ waste and the save of goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Almost unbelievably, United were saved five minutes after the break when Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah passed straight to Bruno Fernandes, who finished off goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher from the center circle.
Kobbie Mainoo put them ahead in the 67th minute with a sensible curling finish at the Stretford End and scored his first home goal.
However, Liverpool salvaged a draw they least deserved when Mohamed Salah scored from the penalty spot six minutes from the end of normal time after Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s late tackle on Harvey Elliott.
Liverpool are currently second behind leaders Arsenal on goal difference, while Manchester City are third, one point behind.
More to observe.
