Michael De Luca and Pam Abbey of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group said Thursday Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Bowens, the Oscar-winning team behind the “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies, will produce and Serkis will direct.
“Yes, precious,” Serkis said in a statement. “It’s time once again to venture into the unknown with our beloved friends, the extraordinary and fantastic guardians of Middle Earth Peter, Fran and Philippa… it’s so delicious.”
The working title is “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” and Walsh and Boynes are writing the screenplay together. The collaboration between Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema is expected to be released in 2026.
The “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” movies have combined to gross nearly $6 billion at the box office. “The Return of the King” won a record 11 Oscars, including best director and best picture, tying “Titanic” and “Ben-Hur” for the most wins.
De Luca and Abdi said in a statement that the team represents their commitment to excellence in furthering the cinematic history of “Lord of the Rings.”
Jackson, Walsh and Bowens, who consider themselves lifelong pioneers of JRR Tolkien’s worlds, added that they look forward to traveling to Middle-earth with Serkis, “who has unfinished business with that Stinker – Gollum!”
The studio also has the animated fantasy “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohrrim,” which hits theaters in December.
