Liverpool beat Tottenham 4-2 at Anfield to condemn the visitors to a fourth straight defeat, leaving their Champions League qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
The Reds were much quicker for the opening hour, with Mohamed Salah adding a second on the stroke of half-time before his side went ahead after a touchline tussle with Jurgen Klopp against West Ham.
Cody Gakpo then nodded Liverpool’s third after the break before Harvey Elliott punished a worse Tottenham side with a superb fourth from long range soon after.
Ange Postecoglou rallied to halve the deficit thanks to goals from substitute Richarlison and Heung-Min Son.
But in the end it was another painful afternoon for Spurs, who have lost four Premier League games in a row for the first time in 20 years and are seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa with just three games remaining.
For Liverpool, third out of the title race, the result at least raises hopes of a positive finish to Klopp’s final campaign in charge.
How Liverpool Overcame Poor Spurs
Salah’s return to the Liverpool team was a major talking point before kick-off and the Egyptian was in action from the start, hitting the bar with a cross and before he scored from Guglielmo Vicario. A lesser attempt was repulsed. The opener
His header from Cody Gakpo’s cross was well taken at the far post but it was poor from Tottenham’s point of view, left unmarked by makeshift left-back Emerson Royal.
Liverpool continued to target the Brazilian, with Salah receiving plenty of support from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Elliott. Their second goal, after Spurs had saved a succession of Liverpool second chances, came from another attack from that side.
Robertson cleverly headed Alexander-Arnold’s cross into the path of Salah early on, and when the winger’s low, first-time effort was parried by Vicario, the left-back was on hand to convert the rebound, with Hapless Emerson was playing with him.
Tottenham defenders Emerson and Cristian Romero had to be separated by Vicario as tensions threatened to escalate on the break, and Spurs continued to collapse in the second half.
Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal face off at halftime.
Emerson was partly at fault again as the excellent Elliott crossed Gakpo for a third shortly after curling a superb long-range effort into the top corner from 25 yards.
It looked as if a miserable afternoon could get even worse for Tottenham as Liverpool continued to enjoy Klopp’s final home game as manager, but the visitors scored twice in the space of five minutes. Made the line respectable.
Richarlison scored the first goal, converting from Brennan Johnson’s low cross, before Heung-Min Son equalised, making his 300th Premier League appearance with a goal in his fifth successive Premier League game against Liverpool.
These strikes added intrigue in the closing stages. Liverpool owed Gomes a crucial, goal-line clearance to prevent Johnson from adding to Spurs’ third but, incident aside, the hosts looked the more likely scorers.
Salah had a goal ruled out for offside, substitutes Darwin Nunes and Dominic Soboszli spurned good chances, and Alexander-Arnold saw a long-range effort skim just over the bar, but four goals were more than enough in the end. were
Liverpool move into third place on 78 points, four behind second-placed Manchester City, while Tottenham are now looking over their shoulders, just four points ahead of sixth-placed Newcastle with three games remaining.
Klopp: Anfield was a special place.
Liverpool the boss Jurgen Klopp to:
“We’re outstanding until we’re not.
“It was a really good game. Tottenham can put pressure on Aston Villa again for the Champions League. In high-performance things, you need a spark. I’d say three points is enough and the boys thought so.
Anfield was a special place today. We were 4-0 up, I made changes and we lost organisation. Tottenham showed how good they can be. I was happy with the performance.
Jurgen Klopp was in good spirits after Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Tottenham.
“We were good in all areas offensively. The passes were good. A lot of things were good. We were calm. As long as they don’t break the lines, fine, let them pass. I liked our game a lot. The goals were fantastic. “
“Mo was fantastic, he played really well. He got on well with Harvey. I was happy for him.
“None of the boys want to play well, why would they? Mo showed what he’s capable of.
“When you do it, you do it and if you lose it, you lose it. If we win all three we can take Liverpool’s fifth-most points.
Ange: At least we were like ourselves.
Spurs the boss Ange Postecoglou to:
“Obviously a very disappointing result for us but at least we were like ourselves today in terms of our football.
Our last two away games at Newcastle and Chelsea, apart from the results that weren’t good, we just didn’t try to play our football.
“I thought today, even in the first half, some of our football, our pressure was back where it should be.”
“Probably in the front third.
“It’s probably a bit of a lack of confidence but again it’s something the boys have to work through.
“You have to find a way to overcome that because ultimately if you don’t put pressure on the opposition in the third party after working your way through, they will be comfortable with their position.”
