LG Display recently announced a new version of its unique stretchable display with improved flexibility and durability. The 12-inch prototype can now be stretched to 18 inches without destruction, opening up new possibilities for potential screen mounting.
The company first demonstrated a prototype of the display in 2022, but at the time it could only be stretched 12 to 14 inches, or about 20 percent of its length. The latest prototype features a “new wiring structure” and an improved silicon substrate – similar to the material used to make contact lenses – to increase the stretchability of the panel by up to 50 percent.
Built using micro LEDs, the new prototype can display full RGB colors at 100 ppi resolution and is more rugged than previous versions. According to LG Display, “it can be repeatedly stretched more than 10,000 times, maintaining clear image quality even under extreme conditions such as exposure to low or high temperatures and external shocks.”
While flexible displays have been available to consumers for years in foldable smartphones and even TVs that roll up out of sight, LG Display has yet to announce any commercial applications of its stretchable screen. However, the company expects the technology to find many applications, including portable displays integrated into clothing without compromising comfort, or infotainment screens in cars that adapt to the curves or shape of the dashboard without limiting the vehicle’s interior design.
