Leandro Trossard believes a “top-level” performance is required to beat Bayern Munich after rescuing Arsenal from an exciting 2-2 attract the primary leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
Gunners substitute Trossard equalized 14 minutes from time on Tuesday night, putting the tie perfectly in place ahead of next week’s second leg on the Allianz Arena.
Former Arsenal striker Serge Gnabry and former Tottenham striker Harry Kane turned the match in Bayern’s favor after Bukayo Saka’s early kick-off.
“They showed how they can hurt us, so we have to work on that next week,” Trossard told his club’s website.
If we’re at our highest level, we can beat them. I hope we can finish there.
“Trust is really high. We have been playing so well over the last weeks and months and I’m glad we managed to equalize.
“It was a perfect goal for us and a great feeling.
“It’s very important to go to Munich and get this result, so there’s something to play for.”
Ben White wasted a golden opportunity to double Arsenal’s lead after Saka’s 12th-minute strike sparked wild scenes at the Emirates Stadium.
A defensive error allowed Gnabry to equalize, before England captain Kane converted a penalty when Leroy Sane’s wild move was stopped by William Saliba’s dangling leg.
The Premier League leaders were later let off when Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg opted not to penalize a bizarre handball by Gunners defender Gabriel in his own penalty area.
Trossard took advantage of that fortune, clinically scoring his 13th goal of the season after excellent work from fellow substitute Gabriel Jesus, before Arsenal were denied a last-gasp penalty when Bukayo Saka went down following a challenge from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
At the end of a breathtaking romance, Mikel Arteta’s men were left with conflicting emotions.
“I would say it’s a mixed feeling,” said the 29-year-old Belgian striker.
“We started the first half very well – in the first 15, 20 minutes we could have led by three goals – and then you can see the quality of their play, especially in attack, they have individual quality.
“They are very strong on the counter-attack and that is where they hurt us. Ultimately we are happy with the equalizing goal and we have to do it there. It will be a difficult match.”
