Leah Williamson was substituted at half-time in Arsenal’s Women’s League Cup final match against Chelsea.
There were no obvious incidents in the first half, which ended in a goalless draw, but when the Gunners got here out for the second half, England captain Williamson was replaced by Lai Codina.
Williamson’s right knee was taped before the game, nevertheless it’s unclear whether she was injured or the extent of the injury.
That can be a priority for Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman as the national team is scheduled to face Sweden and Ireland in Euro 2025 qualifying next week.
Former England and Brighton defender Fern Whelan told BBC 5 Live during the match about Arsenal’s captaincy substitution: ‘I didn’t see Leah Williamson kicked in the first half nevertheless it’s actually a forced substitution that was presented to the players. Jonas Eidevall.
“It’s a great change for Laia Codina, but it does cause some disruption to the team that the team might not want to deal with.”
This might be an enormous blow for England as Williamson was as a consequence of return to England for the first time since the anterior cruciate ligament injury ruled her out of the World Cup in the summer of 2023.
Chelsea went into the League Cup final at Molineux still chasing 4 trophies in Emma Hayes’ final season at the club before she leaves to take over the United States women’s national team duties in what’s arguably the biggest job in women’s soccer.
But before that happens, they’ll still be in the hunt for the League Cup, Women’s Super League, Champions League and FA Cup.
