Justin Timberlake may have taken too many breaks between albums and was involved in a lot of negative press surrounding the release of Britney Spears’ memoir – causing fans to lose interest in the one-time megastar.
“Six years from your mid-thirties to your forties is a really long time. [for an artist]” music Journalist Tori Of TheGrio told News Nation’s Paula Froelich.
“Most of [Timberlake’s] fans are too old to care about him. It’s like the old saying, ‘You don’t retire – the audience retires you.’
The pop star released his sixth album, “Everything I Thought It Was,” on March 15, his first since 2018’s “Man in the Woods.”
While it debuted at number 19. Billboard Hot 100 a month later, it had fallen off the Billboard Hot 200 entirely.
The singer’s “The Forget Tomorrow” tour, his first in five years, is also experiencing sluggish sales. Instead of selling out arenas, tickets are available in almost every city in all sections with the most expensive going for just $900.
Even worse, on Friday, the former NSYNC star went so far. On the webpage for the concert in Columbia, SC, Ticketmaster explains: “Unfortunately, the event organizer has had to cancel the event,” without further explanation.
Timberlake, 43, has yet to comment on the status of the canceled show.
Another factor that may have contributed to his recent decline in popularity is the October release of his ex Britney Spears’ barely remembered “The Woman In Me.”
The “I’m a Slave 4 You” singer spoke for the first time about her tumultuous three-year relationship that was marred by an abortion on Timberlake’s advice and cheating with “some other celebrity.” The “Like I Love You” singer broke up with the songstress via text.
All told, Spears, 42, revealed that her abortion at age 19 was Timberlake’s idea, because he didn’t want to be a father.
“I’m sure people will hate me for this, but I agreed not to have a baby. I don’t know if it was the right decision,” she writes. “If it was left up to me, I would never have done it. And yet Justin was so sure he didn’t want to be a father.
In January, Spears apologized. To come clean about his book on Instagram, she posted a clip of Timberlake with the caption, “I want to apologize for some of the things I wrote in my book. If I offended any of the people I love I’m really sorry.”
However, instead of accepting her apology and accepting any past indiscretions, Timberlake stated publicly that he would like to “take this opportunity to apologize – to absolutely no one” during his concert at Irving Plaza.
In response, Spears not only deleted her apology, but returned with a new post that read, “Someone told me someone was talking about me on the streets!!! Want to take it to court or will you go home crying to your mom like last time? I’m not sorry!!!”
