John Oliver takes a closer look at the results of the 2024 presidential election to examine how Donald Trump beat Kamala Harris.
Obviously, it wasn’t the outcome Oliver had hoped for, spending the end of last week’s show arguing for undecided viewers to vote for the Democratic candidate, Vice President Harris.
“[O]n Tuesday, Trump won re-election,” he said at the start of Sunday’s show, to cheers from the audience, “which, to put it mildly, is not what I personally was hoping for. . And honestly, in Trump’s victory speech, he couldn’t believe it either.
The HBO host then showed a clip of Trump’s speech, in which the former president and current president-elect said: “We’ve overcome obstacles that no one thought possible, and now it’s clear. We have achieved the most incredible political thing.” He said incredulously: “Look what happened? Is it crazy?”
Oliver said: “Yeah, it’s crazy. It’s really crazy. He’s basically one sentence away from saying, ‘I mean, you guys saw what I did, right? And you then It doesn’t make any sense to vote for him.
Oliver continued: “I know being a verbal mess is part of the Trump brand, but it’s still incredible to see an incoming president with the same energy in a victory speech as the best man ever.” Didn’t realize he had to give a toast: ‘What a beautiful day, my brother and his girlfriend, today they did what you all did I thought I was done with the bachelor party, but here we go. It’s crazy, right?
Oliver noted how it’s been a “precipitous week” in which “the smallest moments of the week, where the world was going on as if nothing had happened, can suddenly become agitated.” He cites examples such as a relative texting a Thanksgiving invitation, sending an alert about a roast chicken recipe, and posting Hello Kitty on Brand X with the title of a word search puzzle. is, “Checking in… What are you looking forward to this month?”
“Hey, hello kitty — no more cursing,” said Oliver. “I’d love to tell you what I’m waiting for, but I can’t seem to ‘drink my lights.’ [having] Some grief mac and cheese on your stupid puzzle. Get the hell out of here.”
He noted that X users also went crazy over the video teaser for Tyla’s new song, which showed a derriere being buffed while wearing jean shorts. The teaser was posted the day after the election and drew reactions like “not a girl anymore”. Not now” and “Tyla reading the room” along with a GIF of Lea Michelle. However, many others pointed out that the singer is South African, with one noting: “She’s literally South African. … Nobody is happy that Trump won, including me, but he is literally not American. What do you all want from him?”
“Which is fair,” Oliver noted. “People in other countries are allowed to wear their jean shorts. They didn’t put us in this situation. We did.”
He continued: “And, and honestly, if you’re looking at it right now and thinking, you know, I’m not even ready for that, I totally get it. I get it. Another guy in Suitdom doesn’t want to laugh at you, so if you’re too angry, depressed or upset to watch the rest of the show, that’s okay I’ve been, and it’s all a valid response because, look, we had a show after the election in 2016 when nobody expected Trump to win. This time, though, his victory looked like a real possibility all year Realized, many people mobilized to stop it, but it happened anyway, which feels somewhat bad.”
