John Oliver was the favorite performer at this year’s Eurovision contest.
The HBO host kicked off the show by addressing the annual international music competition, which crowned its latest winner this weekend.
“The Eurovision Song Contest has been held amid many controversies, from calls for a boycott of Israel’s participation to the last-minute elimination of a Dutch contestant for alleged illegal threats backstage,” Oliver said. “It was a lot of serious news in what is usually a brilliantly silly competition, which still had some surprising contestants, from Baby Lasagna from Croatia to Bambi Thug from Ireland, this guy from Finland.”
Oliver then played a clip of Finnish competitor Windows95man, who performed his song “No Rules!” started his performance. While inside a giant egg covered in denim. Watch the full performance below.
Oliver’s take: “Yes! 14,000 out of 10. A man with blond locks and damaged glasses coming out of a denim egg? It’s like Botticelli – only this time, it’s actually good.”
This explained the actor (real name: Timo Castari).
“The artist’s name — and I mean artist — is Windows 95 Man,” Oliver said. “His stage costume consists of a Windows 95 T-shirt, a hat and, importantly, nothing else, which is why the performance essentially consists of an extension of Austin Powers. But perhaps the best thing about Windows95man – In addition to her name, facial clothing and partial nudity, the jury voted her dead last during the competition to select Finland’s representative at Eurovision, but she won the audience’s vote by such a large margin Lia, he won anyway – which makes sense to me. Finns are naturals at ski jumping, sauna and know a star when they see one.
“I don’t know what their other contestants were like, but I highly doubt they have stagecraft like a pair of jean shorts coming down through the roof,” he added. He’s showing off the bit where Windows95man fires what looks like a rope attached to his jean shorts when he wears them.
“Fuck all other music. It’s dead to me now,” Oliver said.
He then quotes some lyrics from the song: “To quote a great poet dressed in ripped denim: ‘I don’t care what’s wrong and what’s right, I live my life.’ That’s how I live,’ and that’s my champion right there.”
Because it was taped on a Saturday, Oliver did not know the outcome when Sunday’s episode was recorded. But he was likely disappointed as Swiss actor Nemo won the competition, while Window95man came 19th.
