John Milne is not saying anything. The comedian said this week that he is open to the idea of more talk shows, and has been heavily mooted to host the Oscars.
“I used to have strong opinions: ‘I’ll only do this’ or ‘I’ll never do that.’ and ‘I don’t want to catch pigeons like that.’ And I think me and the whole entertainment business has changed a lot,” the comedian explained. “I mean, there are people who host a game show one hundred percent every week and we have no idea — except for the millions of people who are watching them.”
Last month, he hosted six nights of live shows on Netflix, a Los Angeles-based cookie talk show he created in partnership with Netflix called Joke Fest.
“I’m very much into instinct now and what’s going on at the moment,” he said this week, coming together through instinct. “I don’t really have any strong rules on doing it again. It was a lot of fun, you know?
Mulaney re-shared the outlet’s article on his Instagram Story on Wednesday, writing that he was “intrigued” by the six live nights of performance.
In addition to fan debate over Mulaney’s future as a talk show host, others online have also voiced support for the possibility of hosting the Oscars. In January, he hosted the Academy’s Governor Awards, where pieces of his monologue went viral online.
“I really enjoyed doing it,” he said of the event. “I will say: I’m open to anything.” I personally have an attachment. [something lower key]. It’s a lot of fun trying to do your best at the biggest award shows like the Spirit Awards or the Governor’s Awards. They are a bit more relaxed and comfortable. It’s a great feeling to go in and try to have a lot of fun.
Mulaney co-hosted the Film Independent Spirit Awards with Nick Kroll in 2017 and 2018. He has never hosted the Oscars.
