Update 4/7: Well, if “7 Minute Drill” gave the impression of Cole did not have his heart on this beef, he confirmed and emphasized that statement shocking speech at the annual Dreamville Festival late Sunday evening. Addressing the 1000’s of fans in the audience and people watching the livestream, Cole admitted he “felt conflicted” and “didn’t really feel like it” although the world desired to see blood. He then formally withdrew his response to the criticism directed at Kendrick Lamar, even suggesting that he might remove the song from streaming services. Cole’s mea culpa went thus far as to say that if Kendrick still had a number of words about Cole’s stab wax, he would take them in stride. There have been apologies and truces before in the rap game, but never a 48-hour comeback and an olive branch like this, especially for something that did not incite actual violence. Original story below.
There’s never really an argument until all parties become involved, and two weeks after Kendrick Lamar threw a grenade into the middle of Drake and J. Cole’s kumbaya bonfire, we finally got our first answer. While fans eagerly wait for Drake – who earned the lion’s share of Kendrick’s ire together with his guest verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That” – to talk out (and fill the time with too-deep readings of his Instagram captions and seemingly extra-emotional onstage tirades) , J. Cole stepped in to warn Kendrick that he wasn’t as ready for war as he thought.
It should be admitted that Cole was undoubtedly spurred into motion by the calendar. His annual Dreamville festival starts this weekend, and if Cole took the stage without saying a word to Kendrick on behalf of the crowd, he could be roasted to no end. But he didn’t exactly drop the nuclear bomb either.
