Humphrey Kerr has revealed the timeline he wants for Wrexham to reach the promised land of the Premier League after securing promotion to League One at the first time of asking.
Kerr – the writer, comedian and actor who first pitched the idea of buying an English football club to Rob McElhenney and is now Wrexham’s executive director – has become a fan favorite on the Disney+ docuseries. Welcome to Wrexham As the amiable British conduit between club and celebrity owners McElhaney and Ryan Reynolds.
Finally returning to the Football League after a 15-year absence at the end of the 2022–23 season, Wrexham successfully secured back-to-back promotions to League Two, finishing second behind Stockport County. navigated to and played League One football for the first time in two decades in August.
Given the money and support behind the club, fans will inevitably be dreaming of a third straight promotion and a place in the Championship but Kerr is keen to manage expectations.
“I think the promotion will be a real push,” he said in an exclusive interview with free “I think we’ve often talked about the idea that it takes three transfer windows to really build a squad that you need to compete in one division and then one next season. The window will be smaller.
“But I think the core of this team is very strong. They’re very strong personalities, good athletes and they love each other, so it’s a great foundation. We’ll add players in the summer and sadly say goodbye to one or two, which is the nature of football, and then we’ll see where we end up.
“Inside the building, we’re like, ‘Look, our goal is to get up and get up, stabilize and build a good platform and go again next year.’ But stranger things have happened than promotion – we could go through redistribution.
“To be honest, it’s probably too fast for us. It won’t be as good for the club as a whole if we go all the way this year because we’re going so early. Then we’ll have to get the infrastructure and our facilities. Will try and everything will be a big, big challenge so I think something nice and comfortable – top mid table, please! I’d be very happy with that.”
With the upcoming third season of Welcome to Wrexham Once again a fairytale ending, thoughts in some quarters are turning to whether the club could get the ultimate Hollywood finish of promotion to the Premier League.
Now in the third tier, they are just two promotions away from the event and Kerr admits everyone at the club has a clear target.
“As soon as possible,” he said when asked what his timeline was for becoming a Premier League club. “Keeping these challenges in mind I was only talking about facilities and infrastructure.
“Our merchandising department is very strong and we make a lot of money selling shirts from the back of the documentary and sponsorships. It’s all very, very strong but it’s also quite fragile because we don’t have a big operation behind it. “
And Kerr also admitted that the club’s pace of progress has come with some personal setbacks.
“The real double-edged sword of our success is that we can’t take everyone with us on the journey,” added Kerr. “Especially this summer, I think there’s going to be one or two faces that are going to be the real heroes of the last couple of years, that are either getting to the age where they start to lose half a yard of speed. Have been or they won’t necessarily be starting the game.
“There were people who left last summer that I was sad to see go but I think there will be two or three this summer who will be really, really sad to see them go. I hope That they will still come back and be a part of the future with us.
