Generative AI is an exciting, powerful, controversial latest technology and if Mark Zuckerberg if it’s something that may fade away, it won’t fade away anytime soon. If you employ any of Meta’s mobile apps, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or WhatsApp, you have probably already noticed the brand new Meta AI integration built into them recently. It’s all a part of a brand new rollout of Meta AI’s latest multi-language model, Llama 3. While Llama 3 is more powerful than previous versions, these latest buttons and prompts make it harder than ever to ignore the feature.
Let’s assume you are not yet sold on AI and want to proceed searching and scrolling the old-fashioned way. Can you disable the brand new Meta AI integration and how to do it?
What is MetaAI?
First, know your enemy. Since then, Meta AI Assistant has been on the market September 2023But latest update puts it directly into search fields and sometimes even into app feeds, including Facebook and Instagram. Integration varies barely by app, but generally speaking, clicking the search box (or sometimes the chat button) within the Meta app will bring up an iridescent rainbow circle with a prompt next to it saying: “Ask Meta AI anything.”

If you make the most of the Meta offer, you’ll have the ability to write Meta AI responses or generate images, that are classic AI assistant functions. The app will even offer you some suggestions, and with Llama 3 it may well now generate gifs and return search ends in real time from Google or Bing.
The problem with these features is that they’re mixed in with non-AI features, so it may well be a bit confusing to tell them apart. Here’s how to disable Meta AI, and if not, a minimum of how to ignore it.
How to disable Meta AI on Facebook
The Facebook app has one of the famous Meta AI integrations. Opening the app and clicking the magnifying glass icon in the highest right corner will still take you to the search bar, but it should now display the Meta AI logo, sample prompts asking what to ask Meta AI, and a brief command to “Ask Meta AI anything.”
Don’t panic. Your regular search function hasn’t disappeared. Search for a friend’s name, a selected event, and even “New York Yankees fans” and you may get the identical results as at all times. The difference is that together with these results, you’ll now receive AI-powered search suggestions, marked with the Meta AI logo on the left (non-AI suggestions will as a substitute be marked with a magnifying glass). Clicking on a reply with the Meta AI logo will take you from search to the chat window with Meta AI, where you may interact with it like every chatbot or return to search by pressing the “X” button within the upper left corner. Pressing Enter without clicking on any of the suggested searches may also proceed the search as usual.

Likewise, scrolling through your feed may additionally prompt you to use Meta AI, either through a general tab placed between posts, or through a small footer at the underside of certain posts, offering to use the AI to inform you more details about that post.
Because AI is so integrated into the standard app experience, it is sensible that some users may not want to be interrupted.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a easy way to turn this off for now. Facebook’s support page offers no such solutions, and Meta AI’s query on how to disable them gives conflicting answers, none of which worked in our tests.
However, this doesn’t mean that there isn’t a longer hope. Fortunately, all Meta AI integration is now branded with the Meta AI logo, so for those who don’t see it, you already know your content is coming from an actual person (or a minimum of a more old-fashioned bot). Additionally, while you’re chatting with Meta AI, you may hold a reply to rate, delete, pin, or copy it. Group owners can even prevent Meta AI from pinning on their posts by going to their group, tapping the three dots within the upper right corner, clicking “Add features”, scrolling to Meta AI and clicking “remove” within the settings tab next to “Help members get information”.
How to disable Meta AI on Instagram
Instagram’s Meta AI integration is more lenient than Facebook’s, because it only appears while you click the search bar and works in an identical way to its sister app. Search suggestions shall be mixed with more traditional ones and marked with an iridescent Meta AI logo, while non-AI search suggestions will as a substitute be marked with a magnifying glass. Clicking on Meta AI’s suggestions will open the chat – essentially the identical chat log from Facebook or every other Meta app – where you may rate or delete your replies.
Unfortunately, there isn’t any way to completely disable Meta AI here either, which may be doubly frustrating since I’ll probably be trying to find “how to peel an onion” or “how to cut an avocado” more often here than on Facebook itself. Just listen to the icon next to suggested searches and it is best to have the ability to avoid the AI for now.
How to disable Meta AI in Messenger and WhatsApp
Messenger and WhatsApp have the only integration with Meta AI – here the chatbot is just treated as one other person in your contacts. Clicking on a conversation with him will open the chatbot, which is able to again remember any questions you will have asked it in other Meta-owned apps.

Other than that, the one other integration is a small icon within the lower middle or upper right corner of the screen, depending on the app. Clicking the icon may also open a conversation with Meta AI, which is vital for those who delete the chat.
That’s right, there’s a way to “remove” Meta AI from these applications. Just delete your conversation with him like you’ll every other conversation and it should disappear out of your contact list. A small icon will remain elsewhere within the app’s interface, presumably to allow you to start a brand new conversation for those who unintentionally delete yours, but otherwise the AI presence here is totally unobtrusive.
