- StarTech.com Universal Laptop Lock Available from Amazon for $46.
- A solid, well-designed laptop lock is enough to deter an opportunistic thief.
- Not the lightest, easiest thing to carry.
As tech gadgets become increasingly compact and lightweight, they become more vulnerable to theft. The threat may be nearly impossible to eliminate, but you can significantly deter thieves.
One tool that I have found to be quite effective is StarTech.com Universal Laptop Lock. It is a 6.6-foot, cut-resistant steel cable with a lock on one end that fits into a variety of security slots. The opposite end has a loop, which you can secure around an immovable object, making it much more difficult for someone to walk away with your device.

Laptop locks aren’t a new concept, and thanks to the variety of security slots that can be found on devices — from laptops to docking stations — finding the right lock can be difficult.
The Universal Laptop Lock solves this problem with an adjustable tip that fits the three most common security slot types. Simply turn the adjuster to modify the tip size to match your device.

Note: A popular line of laptops that don’t have a security slot are Apple’s MacBooks.
Additionally, the universal laptop lock comes with a set of spacers that ensure the lock sits snugly against the body of the device, preventing any scratches or scuffs.

The cable also includes a loop at the opposite end that can be secured around a table leg or other strong anchor point. With a thickness of 0.17 inches (4.4 mm), the sturdy cable kit consists of resistant carbon steel, making it a formidable challenge to cut with a hacksaw or scissors.
Although no lock is completely foolproof, and a skilled individual can defeat a lock in less than a minute, it is unlikely that an opportunistic thief will be able to pick it. have the skills or tools required to do so, without the key.

The lock is engineered to withstand brute force efforts, such as yanking and pulling, to counter aggressive forms of attack. This robust design acts as a substantial deterrent against theft.

Overall, this is a tough lock that is well designed to keep your belongings safe. The only real downside: a steel cable that weighs about 5.2 oz (147 g) is worth lugging around if you plan to use it outdoors.
ZDNET’s shopping advice
Although a determined or skilled attacker could potentially overcome this lock, such individuals are rare. It’s the opportunistic thief who poses the biggest threat, and a strong lock like this will make them think twice before trying to steal your stuff. I think it makes it StarTech.com Universal Laptop Lock A great buy for under $50.
