Apparently, only donuts could dethrone Delta from the top of the Apple App Store. Previously, the game emulator was the most popular app on iOS for a full two weeks, after launching following an unexpected Apple policy change that ultimately gave emulators the green light. But Delta’s history goes back much further. Riley Testut, an app developer, has been working on emulators for ten years and has seen firsthand how exactly the App Store works and how it is changing.
In this episode of The Vergecast, Testut joins the show to tell us the full story of Delta. He describes his early attempts at creating emulators, the moment he almost made it to the App Store for the first time, the process of creating the alternative app store AltStore, what it was like to watch regulators around the world take aim at Apple, and much more.
Then we break away from our talk about lame AI gadgets to talk about one really cool use case we’ve found for AI: voice memos. Whether you want to keep a diary, discuss your to-do list, or get automatic notes for all your phone calls, there are many good gadgets and apps that make transcribing and summarizing easier.
Finally, we answer the rabbit-related question on the Vergecast hotline about whether AI gadgets should be gadgets at all.
