Heidi Gardner talks about her time with Travis Kelce when they hosted the Kansas City Chiefs after they won the Super Bowl in March 2023.
The cast member stopped by on Friday, where she discussed how she initially suggested Lorne Michaels host the sketch comedy series before Kelsey made it big, with the hosts joking that Gardner was the one before Taylor Swift. Loved him.
Being a Kansas City, Missouri, native, the comedian told Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager that she was “very protective” of the Chiefs tight end. She added, “I asked him questions that, as a sports fan, I’m just interested in, but I was like, ‘On game day, what do you eat?’ And he was like, ‘Invincible. I’m just killing incorruptibles.'”
On the day of hosting, the actress told the morning show hosts that she went to the store and bought a bunch of Incrustables for Kelis to snack on. “I was like, ‘I want it to feel as homey as possible,'” she said.
He shared that while the two of them were rehearsing a sketch in which they were lying in bed together (“Sorry, Taylor,” he joked), he expressed his appreciation for the gift.
“He leaned on me right before the lights on the scene, and he was like, ‘I’ve been eating Incrustables all day.’ And I was like, ‘Cool,'” she said, adding that she thought he “won” and “did such a good job.”
