England have been promoted to Euro 2024 after UEFA allowed confirmed teams to select up to 26 players in their squad.
Gareth Southgate’s options for the tournament in Germany have now increased.
UEFA’s executive committee confirmed on Friday that the maximum squad size for participating teams has now changed from the original quota of 23 to 26 players.
Southgate are due to announce their squad on June 8 after the domestic season with two friendlies against Bosnia and Iceland. The deadline for submitting squad lists to UEFA is June 7.
Despite the option, Southgate is not bound to increase the size of his squad and may choose to limit his squad to the original limit of 23 players.
The governing body held talks with representatives of the countries that qualified for Euro 2024 last month in Dusseldorf.
National team squads for the tournament were limited to 23 players, as the governing body reverted to the rules before the postponed Euro 2020, when an extra three players were allowed in the squad due to the possibility of the Covid outbreak.
But the move comes after increased debate around player workloads and concerns over the past two years since the 2022 World Cup was moved to mid-season.
Many Premier League clubs have been dealing with extensive injury crises this season.
Euro 2024 kicks off on June 14 when hosts Germany take on Scotland in the opening match at the Allianz Arena in Munich, with England’s campaign kicking off against Serbia at Gelsenkirchen on June 16.
