Disney+’s new logo has leaked online.

Disney+ has changed its logo, but not everyone is supportive of the change — some online are calling it “ugly” and “lifeless.”

Since the Walt Disney Company’s streaming service launched on November 12, 2019, its app icon is dark blue. However, Disney+ recently changed the blue background for a blue-green color. The sweeping gradient leading to the plus sign has also been replaced with a white logo.

When X account @DiscussingFilm Posted News of the change on March 26 was met with derision.

Newsweek Emailed a Disney+ spokesperson for comment.

“Disney+ has changed the color of their logo. Do you like the change?” Above in the post are images of the new and old logos sitting side by side. At the time of writing, the post had been viewed 4.1 million times.

Social media users responded with their thoughts on the new design, with many finding it underwhelming.

“Lifeless colors. Got rid of the beautiful blur in the curve. The graphic design is gone lol,” wrote one commenter.

Another added, “It just looks like a watered-down, lighter, less animated version, which might actually be perfect for how many people watch Disney+ now.”

One user said: “Can we talk about how bland all these company logos are lately? What happened to creativity? To be different???? Not boring.”

“The absence of color makes sense when you consider that Disney is losing a lot of the magic it once had,” wrote one commenter.

Another added: “It’s disgusting — meh. The original reminded me of Morning Sky Beginning or Evening Sky Bleeding Into Night.”

However, not everyone was unhappy with the change.

“I’d hope all these people whining about this change aren’t adults… because if so… grow up,” one user wrote.

“Hmmmmmm I f**** with it! Could be worse,” added another.

The change has rolled out to Disney+’s website and its app in the Apple App Store, but is not reflected in the Google Play Store. Disney’s media kit still displays the old logo.

While Disney hasn’t explained the color change, there’s speculation that it’s related to Disney+’s ongoing integration with Hulu, whose logo is green. This is likely a precursor to an upcoming app experience that is expected to launch sometime in March. Currently, the company has no plans to remove either of its two streaming services.

In late 2023, Disney bought Comcast’s one-third stake in Hulu for $8.6 billion. A beta version of Hulu on Disney+ began in early December, though both streaming services are available to buy individually or as a package.

The entertainment giant has struggled in the past year—with many of its titles considered box office flops, declining linear TV viewership and an uneven transition to a streaming future.

In November, Disney announced it would cut costs after its films lost nearly $1 billion. In an earnings call, CEO Bob Iger said the company will cut an additional $2 billion in costs in 2024. A representative for Pixar, which is owned by Disney, confirmed. Newsweek in January that the animation studio would undergo layoffs in 2024.

The company is also making money through its Disney+ streaming service, but it managed to cut losses by increasing subscription costs.
