Denzel Washington shares his thoughts on the current political landscape in the United States.
The two-time Oscar-winning actor, who stars in the upcoming Ridley Scott film, was recently asked about the 2024 presidential election, in which Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris earlier this month. During his interview with , editor Jonathan Dean also noted a particular line that felt timely given the election: “Empires fall, and so do emperors.”
“You know, it’s very easy to stand outside America and say this and that,” Washington, 69, said in response. “Turn around, you know? Pick a country. Any.”
“But listen,” the actor continued. “It’s all politics. All promises are broken. And now with the information age as it is — if anything — the left, the right, whoever had better learn to use these tools to manipulate people. How To Use There was a great line in my first movie, [1981’s] : ‘Power to the people? Yes, they had it once – it was called the Stone Age.
“We’re all slaves to information now. We really are. We’re all slaves. So whatever you feel about leaders, like this guy’s crazy or this guy’s sane, you’d better realize that you’re on both sides. period,” Washington added. “Yeah. So go to the movies.”
Starr has previously been vocal about urging people to “open our eyes” and hold elected officials accountable in office.
“I think as Americans, we need to unite and hold all of our elected officials’ feet to the fire as it relates to working together,” he said in 2017. “We need to demand that they work together through our vote, that they work together to find a solution.”
During his interview elsewhere, Washington also reflected on his career, admitting that not all of his films were hits.
“Later [1992’s] I made some real clunkers. Look at them — I won’t name them,” Washington said. “They’re all in the 1990s. But I was earning. I had responsibilities.”
Although the actor did not specify which of his films he considered “clunkers”, the films he starred in during the decade included , , , , , and .
But Washington noted that he was more proud of his projects in the 2000s, which included and .
“So, 2000…” he thought. “Well, in life, you learn, you earn and then you come back – as in give back. So if your life is 90 years long, you learn for 30 and you spend 30 for 60. till you earn. So at that time I was earning with a great agent, my career started earning and then life started with bills, four kids and a house.
