Dele Alli hopes he’s near returning to football after spending months on the bench with a groin injury. The 28-year-old underwent hip surgery while on loan at Besiktas last season and has not featured for Everton within the 2023/24 season.
He was making full recovery in January before he suffered a groin injury and had to return to the operating table to correct the issue. Since then, the midfielder has been slowly recovering and needs to return to the pitch.
Dele joined the Merseyside club in 2022 but has only made 13 appearances in his two years with Everton.
Speaking as a guest on Sky Sports’ Mondy Night Football show during Everton’s clash with Chelsea, Dele addressed his injury problems in his first interview since July last 12 months, admitting during an appearance on Gary Neville’s show that he was affected by rehabilitation as a result of addiction to sleeping pills. Performance Overlap.
“I’m coping. I think when I did the interview, I said it was the best I felt at the time,” Dele explained to MNF. “I’m obviously coming out of rehab and on the brink of get back into the sport. It’s been difficult, nevertheless it’s a journey, in I’m participating in it, but I’m having fun with it and I’m able to return now.
“When I was interviewed, I said, ‘If I can help one person, that’s all I need.’ I had to do it for my own reasons, but I wanted to help one person, and the response and support I received because of it was overwhelming. It was great to see how many people it helped, and I’m very proud of it.”
Speaking specifically about where he’s in his career now and what his next steps appear to be, Dele added: “I had to be patient and really learn what patience is. It was a long journey with [groin] damage.
“Many ups and downs have helped me grow as a person. I’m not grateful for the injury, but for the opportunity to get to know myself. I think the pain from the injury is something I can take advantage of when I come back and use it as motivation.
“After the interview, many people asked me, ‘When will you come back to football’ and they thought I was taking a break. It was just an injury problem that will hopefully go away. I see light at the end of the tunnel and I’m excited.”
