David Moyes has told indignant West Ham fans that on-loan midfielder Kalvin Phillips needs their support, not abuse.
Phillips’ miserable loan spell at West Ham reached a brand new low on Saturday after he became involved in an indignant exchange with fans following a 4-3 Premier League defeat at Newcastle.
The 28-year-old was spotted apparently giving the center finger to fans who criticized him as he boarded the team bus.
However, Moyes did not condemn Phillips’ actions and insisted that the fans on the London Stadium stood behind the England representative.
“Kalvin is human and can do what we all do in difficult times,” the Hammers boss said.
“He needs support, people to assist him, and we might be there for him and help him as much as we will. Of course we’d like all our fans to supply support to all our players, whoever they’re.
West Ham were leading 3-1 at St James’ Park when Phillips got here on as an alternative with 21 minutes remaining.
He gave away a disputed penalty by inadvertently kicking the leg of Anthony Gordon while attempting to clear the ball, and was also beaten too easily by Harvey Barnes before hitting Newcastle’s last-gasp winner.
Phillips has previously been at fault for scoring goals in the primary two games since joining from Manchester City in January and was needlessly sent off within the fourth, at Nottingham Forest.
The former Leeds favorite was sent off at half-time in his last match as West Ham lost 2-0 at home to Burnley and subsequently lost his place within the England squad.
Phillips might be on the bench again for Tuesday’s home game against Tottenham, but Moyes insisted he can still turn what has to date been a nightmare loan spell right into a successful one.
“He’s doing well, he’s back in training and all of us began the weekend. We have a crucial match ahead of us and we’re already preparing for it. Moyes added.
“Kalvin Phillips is a extremely good player, a world player and I actually think he’s a wonderful player. I imagine we will still do something with the time now we have left here with him.
